Everybody loses scalp hair. At birth, the average head is covered with about 100, 000 follicles - pouch-like sacs that produce individual hairs. Though the number never alters, the activity of each follicle changes as we grow older. Undue loss of hair is called alopecia. Heredity, a medical condition or even medicine can trigger baldness. The most frequently observed type of baldness is called androgenetic alopecia. It is the cause of about 95% of the cases of hair loss in the United States. Males suffer from androgenetic alopecia far more often than women. Two factors effects hair growth: a genetic predisposition to undue hair loss and the male hormone testosterone (yes, females have a low level of testosterone in their bodies). Commonly, an enzyme in hair follicles converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT stimulates the growth of body and beard hair, but also shrinks hair follicles on the scalp, resulting in thinner, fuzzier growth. A genetic predisposition, along with higher levels of testosterone and DHT, increases the probability baldness. Baldness occurs when the rate of hair shedding is larger than the number of re-growth or when the re-growth is finer and/or shorter than the hair that is lost. Androgenetic alopecia is not a medical condition; it is more a cosmetic problem. PROPECIA (Finasterine) is one the most potent methods to treat it sanctioned by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Taken once a day in a tablet form, Propecia inhibits the conversion of testosterone to DHT, therefore helping to prevent the diminishing of hair follicles. The pill must not be taken by women, since it may bring on birth abnormalities. GENERIC PROPECIA, which is as potent as the branded version, is a lot cheaper and, consequently, can be afforded by a larger number of men suffering from hair loss. As a result of a two years' study 83% of men aged 18 - 41 with mild to moderate have maintained their hair. The vast majority of males reported improvement in appearance. As well as other prescription drugs, Generic Propecia may bring on side effects. In clinical studies, side effects from Generic Propecia were rare and did not affect most males. An insignificant number of males faced certain sexual adverse side effects. These adverse side effects were impermanent and went away in males after they stopped taking the drug therapy. These adverse side effects also went away in most males (58%) who went on taking Generic Propecia.
